What human food can cats eat?

Cats are obligate carnivores, so the best human-food treats are small pieces of plain cooked meat, fish, or egg. Most adult cats are lactose intolerant, raw fish and lots of tuna can cause vitamin deficiencies, dog food is not a substitute for cat food, and cats are even more sensitive than dogs to onions and garlic.

How to check if a food is safe for your dog

  1. Step 1

Choose Dog or Cat, because some foods, like dairy and onions, affect cats differently.

  2. Step 2

Type the food's name into the search box and pick it from the list, or browse by category.

  3. Step 3

Read the verdict (safe, moderation, caution, toxic, or emergency) and why.

  4. Step 4

Follow the preparation notes: plain, cooked, unseasoned, with pits, seeds, bones, and xylitol removed.

  5. Step 5

Enter your pet's weight to see the 10% treat calorie budget and a rough serving.

  6. Step 6

If the food is toxic or your pet already ate it, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away.

Can dogs eat it? FAQ

What fruits can dogs eat?

Dogs can eat apples (no core or seeds), bananas, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, seedless watermelon, cantaloupe, mango and peaches (no pit), pineapple, pears, and peeled oranges in small amounts. Never feed grapes, raisins, currants, sultanas, or cherries.

What vegetables can dogs eat?

Carrots, green beans, peas, cucumber, zucchini, celery, lettuce, bell peppers, plain pumpkin, and cooked sweet potato are good choices, with broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and cooked plain potato in moderation. Never feed onions, garlic, leeks, chives, shallots, or corn cobs.

What foods can't dogs eat?

The most dangerous foods for dogs are chocolate, grapes and raisins, xylitol (in sugar-free gum, candy, and some peanut butters), onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol, caffeine, raw yeast dough, cooked bones, fruit pits, and nutmeg. If your dog eats one, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away.
