Dog Calorie Calculator

Calculate your dog's daily calorie needs based on weight, age, activity level, and body condition.

How Many Calories Does My Dog Need?

A dog's daily caloric needs depend on several factors including weight, age, activity level, and body condition. Feeding the right amount of calories helps maintain a healthy weight, supports energy levels, and can prevent obesity-related health issues.

The standard veterinary formula starts with the Resting Energy Requirement (RER), which represents the calories a dog burns at complete rest. This is then multiplied by a factor based on the dog's life stage and activity level to determine the total daily caloric needs.

Understanding the RER Formula

This calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement formula recommended by veterinary nutritionists:

RER = 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75

The RER is then multiplied by a factor that accounts for:

  • Life stage: Puppies need 2-3x RER for growth, seniors need less
  • Activity level: Sedentary dogs need 1.2-1.4x, highly active dogs 4.5-6x
  • Neuter status: Neutered dogs typically need ~10% fewer calories
  • Body condition: Overweight dogs get a reduced multiplier, underweight dogs get more
